RESIDENTIAL CARE SUBSIDY

WHAT IS IT?

If you are going into a care home and you qualify for it to paid for by the government (through the Ministry of Health) then you have to apply in writing by filling out the Residential Care Subsidy Application.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I QUALIFY?

  • Your age, income and assets must be within certain thresholds

  • Click this link to WINZ for the thresholds.

WHERE DO I GET AN APPLICATION FORM?

  • From your needs assessor (NASC).

  • You cannot apply for funding without been assessed by NASC, they will do the assessment and then give you the form to complete.

WHO CAN FILL IT IN?

  • the person entering care

  • their Power of Attorney for Property

  • the person entering care can appoint an agent

    • there is a section in the application to fill in

  • someone wanting to be their agent.

WHAT DOCUMENTS DO I NEED?

  • there is a list on the front of the application.

HOW LONG HAVE I GOT TO APPLY?

  • you have 90 days from the day you enter care and the day WINZ receives your application to be funded (if you met the criteria).  In other words, you will be backdated up to 90 days.

  • After 90 days you will have to pay for all the time you have been in care personally until the application is received (whether you met the criteria or not).

  • note - if you are 50-64 yrs the backdating provision is different.

WHAT ABOUT THE PENSION?

  • your pension will go directly to the care home

  • you get to keep a personal allowance of $45.28 per week and clothing allowance of $283.97 per year (as at 1 April 2019).

Do it asap

  • you don't want to get to day 80 and then run out of time.

Take photocopies

  •  take a couple of photocopies so you can do a "draft"

    • that way you can make errors, do corrections and take notes

    • when ready then complete the "good copy"

  • take a photocopy of your "good copy" that you send to the residential subsidy unit

    • that way if it gets lost you, it is easy to replace.

Get Settled in

  • Make a large pot of tea, cup of coffee (or whatever you like) and be prepared to sit down for a while!

  • go slowly through each section, one at a time.

Take Notes

  • get a pad of paper for taking notes on what you need to find out and what documents you need to get.

If you get stuck

  • The residential subsidy unit is very helpful, we encourage you to contact them

  • This website from WINZ is also useful.
